If you’re looking to do a road trip from Perth to Esperance to visit Lucky Bay, you’re probably wondering how you choose a freedom camp to break up the journey. We did a round trip in 7 days and this is all the spots we found to stop at and make the most of our time!
Just for a bit more info, we picked up and dropped off the van in Perth. The van we hired through Ratpack and it was an Awesome Campers again which was great as we knew what to expect when driving the van and knew we’d be comfy! We really wanted to minimise our costs on this road trip, so aimed to stay in only freedom camp for the whole time. Luckily, we managed to do just that for the whole week and although it meant we were looking forward to a decent shower when we arrived back in Perth, we minimised our expenditure and experienced some of the best camping spots. All in all, our total cost each for this trip was just over £400 and this included our petrol and camper hire!
Campsite 1: IRON FALLS – This was our first freedom camp of the trip. We arrived fairly late but we found a really good spot to park up. There were a few other people also camping and there was even a toilet so we thought this was definitely a good spot.
Campsite 2: CANE BREAK – This was a really quiet site, really picturesque and easy to reach too.
Campsite 3: COSY CORNER EAST – I think this was my fave site on the trip. It was free, but run by a lovely volunteer who kept it all ship shape. As it was monitored, the site had toilets and sinks but the best feature of all is it’s location, right on the edge of the beach! (bottom left pic)
Campsite 4: MINGLINGUP – Getting closer to Lucky Bay we wanted to choose sites as close to our route as possible. This site is on the main route through Minglingup Town so its really easy to find but surprisingly quiet and we had no issues with parking despite it being busy. The site is managed by the town and you can get a hot shower for $2 in the cafe opposite.
Campsite 5: RAVENSTHORPE FREEDOM – This was another small site run by the local town. This one was smaller, but still busy. Public toilets could be found across the road which was really handy too.
Campsite 6: MT BARKER RV REST AREA – Our last stop of the week was at this secluded spot in Mount Barker. Not sure if it was just a quiet spot or unpopular one but we found it perfect. We needed to spread out to repack our backpacks and clean up the van and this spot had all the space. It was a empty carpark so not the most comfy, but as we tucked ourselves in the corner and slept peacefully!

*all of our campsites were found using the Campermate App. I am in no way affiliated with them, but we would not have survived our camper trips without it! As this was pre-pandemic, please check the campsites are still open before heading there!
